The firm’s compensation package starts at 10 to 20 percent above market rate and includes paid time off, health coverage, life insurance, and a 401(k) plan. But there are also intangibles that make the company a great place to work. For example, one employee is an avid skier but can’t plan his vacations in advance since the area’s snowfall is unpredictable. Adams + Beasley gave him five “spontaneous ski days”—vacation he can use with no notice. It’s a benefit that doesn’t translate into more dollars, but is a valued part of that employee’s total package.
