On production meetings: At the end of every Friday, all of our production staff meets in our shop and we go over things that we need to do better. One at a time, each employee will tell the group what they learned that week and what they still want to be taught. Typically the younger guys, like the apprentices and junior carpenters, share tips and tricks that were passed on to them by the more experienced guys.

We’ll also do training during the meetings. For example, someone might mention that they want to learn how to lay out stair stringers. We will get out everything that we need in the shop to demonstrate how to do it and then let the new guys figure it out on an actual stringer.

On team building: We do multiple team events throughout the year. Some of them are just for our team members. We’ll charter a boat for a fishing trip and invite all team members. We also invite our trade partners. It’s about showing everyone who works with us that we appreciate the hard work they put in every day.

We also open some events to families, like a summer barbecue at my house where I cook for everyone. Plus, we hold an event in October where we put up a big tent at a farm and have hayrides and pick pumpkins together. It’s great to see everybody off hours enjoying themselves and getting to bond.
