Men Speak Up

Sept. 1, 2001
In the past, women were the primary decision-makers in home decorating. However, a recent study for Expo Design Center reveals that men are taking a much more active role in picking colors, styles and products during remodeling. The study, conducted by Harris Interactive/Yankelovich Partners, reported that 71% of couples disagree about some aspect of decorating, especially color (31%), style (25%) and quality (15%). Other key findings include:
  • Two-thirds of women say the opinions of their significant others influence their decisions to purchase a decorative item.
  • Men prefer exterior home-renovation projects, such as landscaping, outdoor lighting and grilling systems, to indoor improvements. Renovation of the kitchen was their second priority, but it ranked No. 1 with women.
  • In kitchen remodels, women are more interested in style and a floor plan set up for ease of use, while men are concerned about the functionality of the appliances.
  • Women prefer an informal style, while men lean more toward contemporary colors and designs.
