ProPublica says that much of southeastern Louisiana will become part of the Gulf of Mexico in 50 years due to climate change, drilling and dredging for oil and gas, and levees on the Mississippi River.
The state loses approximately 16 square miles per year, or a football field of land every 48 minutes, due to the changing landscape. In addition to the risks posed to millions of homes, the situation threatens seafood production and much of the country’s offshore oil and gas production.
