Landis Construction was tasked with creating a 3,000-square-foot professional recording studio in a shell of concrete, block and steel in a historic building.
The owner of the studio had specified that the finished space have a DB rating of 20 to 26, even with the HVAC system running — a level at which most people would not hear anything. The client also had very specific acoustic characteristics in mind.
Landis met that challenge with a variety of floor, wall and ceiling systems. The walls had multiple layers of drywall with special sound insulation and alternated studs with sound isolation clips. The floors incorporated multiple layers of plywood and HardieBacker, with kinetic floor board and roll-out isolation mats.
The studio is heated and cooled with a high-efficiency, nine-zone Mitsubishi HVAC system. The trade contractor who installed it had to receive special certification to work with the equipment.
