Sarah Susanka, author of the The Not So Big House, looks at space, light and order, which she collectively dubs "the architect's toolbox," in Home by Design (256 pages). Space topics include entryways, ceiling heights, and "openability" (opening spaces or closing them from one another).

The light section examines intensity and concentration, reflective surfaces and window positioning. The order section addresses pattern and geometry, alignment, rhythm, structure and focal points.

  • The House to Ourselves (224 pages) illustrates how to turn a home into a retreat, family compound and/or working space for active retirees. Seven of the 21 homes featured are remodels. Authors Tom Conner and Todd Lawson explore topics such as clusters and edge rooms, accessibility with style and removing physical obstacles.
