Best Practice: Smith’s father-in-law owns F&S Building Innovations, and the company is marketed as a family operation. The firm does a lot of commercial renovation work, and Smith is tasked with growing the residential division. Part of that is a new branding initiative. The idea is to place Smith and his wife, Alicia, front and center as an outgoing, charismatic team. (Alicia is the company’s marketing director.) “This will spark more creativity and differentiate us from other contractors,” Smith says adding that he got the idea from a popular reality TV show. The marketing plan includes commercials on a local TV station and a heavy presence in social media.
