Forty Under 40: B.J. Werzyn, West Shore

Placing a high priority on operational efficiencies and staying focused on core strengths has created a strong, successful company

April 05, 2017

Owner

West Shore, Mechanicsburg, Pa.

2016 Revenue: $25 million

130 Employees

Best Practice: The key to Werzyn’s success is simple: Find what you do well and stick with it. West Shore has been in business for 10 years, with an average of 35 percent growth every year, Werzyn says, and much of that is due to having a clear set of guiding principles. To that end, West Shore is mission-driven. The company sells and installs windows, doors, and bathroom updates. The team focuses on easy-to-execute projects that can be completed in one or two days, which allows for tighter job costing and the ability to reinvest more of the profits back into marketing. “We don’t do siding or sunrooms or anything like that,” Werzyn says. “Sometimes it’s better for the organization to have the customers conform to what your business model is."

Signed a contract in August shower installed in October without glass. No one came back or called. Now offering one thing verbally and a second offer in an email. Can not or will not finish the job. Now having to contract another business and file in court.

Agreed to a remodel of existing tiled shower. No reference to the financing in the TV commercial "No payments for 18 months and no charge for installation." Even the Customer Service rep says she has never seen the commercial. Since they want payment, paid in full, due within 30 days of the job completion. There was a leak discovered after using the shower once. They have been back 9 times until they were able to conclude that the supply line after the valve must have a leak. They will be returning to replace one wall all the way to the studs. The product looks wonderful. I asked for an "Easy Step" entry, however, the standard was ordered and installed. I have yet to find any other product that exceeds $5,000 much less $15,500. The sales rep refuses to give me a detailed list of the expenses associated with the remodel.

BUILDING PERMIT CALLED FOR FIVE WINDOWS TO BE REPLACE, I HAD BOUGHT 10, I WANTED TEN SO THEY PUT IN TEN. THEY NEVER TOOK CARE OF THE BUIDING PERMIT AND WHEN I CALLED TODAY THEY ASKED WHY WEST SHORE HAD NOT TAKEN CARE OF THE PERMIT NOW IT IS EXPIRED. I EXPLAINED THEY HAD PUT IN 10 WINDOWS AND I WAS TOLD THE PERMIT HAD EXPIRED AND DID I WANT TO FILE A COMPLAINT. I SAID NO BECAUSE THE PERSON WHO SOLD ME THE WINDOWS SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIABLE FOR THE THIS UNDERHANDED JOB. HE FINANCED 1/2 OF THE JOB IN ORDER TO GET THE JOB DONE, AND A FEW WEEKS AGO CALLED ME TO FINANCE THE OTHER 1/2 AND I NEVER GOT ANY PAPER WORK FOR THE FINANCING... IF THIS IS NOT TAKEN CARE OF WITHIN 10 DAYS I WILL FILE A COMPLAINT AND ALSO SEEK LEAGAL ACTION. I DO NOT WANT TO TALK TO MR. FRAZIER BUT TO THE OWNER OF THE COMPANY...
