Solar Energy: What Is Insolation?

March 27, 2015

Microsoft Word may not recognize “insolation” as a word, but it is indeed a legitimate word. Building science writer Allison Bailes explains why this term may become more important in the near future.

“The Wikipedia page on insolation, however, says it's from the Latin word insolare, which means to expose to the sun,” Bailes writes.

In sum, insolation describes the total amount of solar radiation energy received by a given surface area during a given time. As the costs for photovoltaics decrease, learning more about insolation for the average residential project can be a good thing.
