Continued growth has reshaped the remodeling industry in recent years. Nationwide, the number of remodeling companies has nearly doubled since 2000, and remodelers now make up more than half of all residential building firms. Remodeling continues to capture a larger share of the overall residential construction industry market, and even more long-term gains are possible.
Now is the time to ensure your business is on solid footing.
As I step into my new role as 2026 Chairman of the Board for the National Association of Home Builders, I want to encourage everyone to engage with professionals beyond your current network and use your NAHB membership to help shape the future of the remodeling industry. By expanding your professional connections, you gain access to deeper experiences and broader perspectives that strengthen you as a remodeler and a business owner and enable you to become part of something larger.
I’m a remodeler—and proud of it. I’m a past chairman of NAHB’s Remodelers Council and three-time Building Industry Association of Central Ohio Remodeler of the Year. And now I am the first NAHB chairman whose primary business is remodeling. Next year, my fellow remodeler, Bob Peterson of Colorado, will serve as NAHB’s 2027 chairman. I’m energized by the fact that remodelers make up nearly 25% of NAHB’s total membership. Bob and I are proof that NAHB welcomes remodelers in positions of leadership.
I started my company more than 40 years ago and joined NAHB early on to learn how to build, strengthen, and help it grow. Now, it’s my time to give back to the industry that has meant so much to me.
NAHB represents the entire residential construction industry, from home builders and remodelers to trade professionals, product suppliers, and many others. There’s a place in the Federation for everyone who helps build homes and communities. It's a true coast-to-coast organization with unmatched resources and outsized influence on housing policies at the local, state, and national levels. I want to help my fellow remodelers tap into this reservoir of industry knowledge and advocacy expertise.
Becoming an NAHB member provides instant credibility with prospective customers. Many homeowners look at membership status when considering project bids because it signals integrity and dependability. Staying engaged with your local and state home builders associations truly matters because today’s remodeling demands aren’t going away soon.
The nation’s aging housing stock, surging home prices, and growing older population will continue to drive the remodeling market for the rest of this decade and likely longer. Today, 35% of U.S. homes were built before 1970 with only 3% were built after 2020, which means many people are living in homes that need updating. Rising home prices have provided owners more equity to fund renovation projects. And the country’s population continues to age with the share of Americans over 65 rising from 12.4% in 2004 to 18% in 2024, creating a need for universal design and aging-in-place modifications.
Combined, there’s great opportunity for remodeling success in the near future, and it begins with local, state, and national involvement with NAHB. The Federation provides remodelers with access to information, advocacy, and peer networks that can make a real difference in how their business operates. Through engagement, you’ll discover first-hand how our Federation is working to strengthen the industry.
There’s a place for remodelers at every level of NAHB, and I hope to see more of us step into these roles. We’re on the right track. I’m honored to begin my time as chairman and am excited for what we’ll build together in the years ahead.
