NAHB Remodeler Members Mostly Operate Small Businesses

Each year, the National Association of Home Builders conducts a census of its members, and the 2024 results show that the largest group of remodelers earns between $1 million and $5 million.

The National Association of Home Builders conducts an annual census of its members, and the 2024 results show that 21% of NAHB members report residential remodeling as their primary business activity, and most of the companies are small, operating with five employees on payroll. More than half of remodelers are secondarily engaged in single-family home building. 

Dollar Volume of Business Activity

The median dollar volume for residential remodelers was $1.7 million, with more than 80% earning less than $5 million. The largest group (44%) earned between $1 million and $5 million. On the higher end, 4% earned more than $10 million. For context, the Small Business Administration classifies residential remodelers as small if they have average annual receipts of $45 million or less.

Completed Residential Remodeling Jobs

Residential remodelers completed 32 jobs over $10,000; the median was 15 jobs. Twenty-five percent of remodelers completed between 26 and 99 jobs; 25% completed between 11 and 25; 19% completed between six and 10; and 20% completed between one and five.
