Kitchen and bathroom remodels could be getting more expensive after President Trump took to social media on Sept. 25 and announced new tariffs on imported cabinets and vanities. Starting Oct. 1, the U.S. will implement a 50% tariff on both cabinets and vanities and “associated products.”

The National Association of Home Builders reported that tariffs are being imposed under a law known as Section 232, which allows the president to enact trade restrictions if the U.S. government determines they are a threat to national security. Details on the proposed tariffs or how they represent a security threat are still sparse. NAHB is working to get additional information from the Trump administration on how the tariffs might affect construction costs.

Notably, the American Kitchen Cabinet Alliance applauded the move, stating in a letter to President Trump that America’s $14 billion cabinet industry is “being decimated due to decades of unfair foreign trade practices perpetrated by foreign companies” and that they want a “strong tariff rate to be imposed immediately.”
