Recently, remodeling educator and trainer Mark Paskel helped a contractor working on an insurance estimate for his client. In the process they discovered that the repairs would trigger expensive code updates.
An ice-dam had pulled a gutter off the roof and into a wood balcony, sending ice and wood debris crashing through the glass roof of the home's solarium. But merely replacing the glass would not meet the current energy code. On top of that, the roof did not meet current code for snow loads or foundation.
Although Paskel and the contractor were successful in expanding the insurance company's original settlement offer to cover the cost of the standard repairs, the homeowner had to kick in thousands to cover the required code updates.
