Building scientist and writer Jeffrey C. May likens air circulation in a home to breathing. “A house ‘breathes’ as air flows from the outside to the inside,” he writes.
May gives several examples of designs and appliances that are detrimental to a home’s air quality, and possibly detrimental to the home’s occupants.
For example, May argues that “fan only dehumidifiers” depressurize the basement, potentially pulling in moisture and pollutants. Other examples of IAQ problems include a fresh air intake that was too close to exhaust from a direct-vent boiler.
