In the 1980s, an HBR study found that 85 percent of U.S. employees said they needed places to concentrate without distractions. As the study results spread through the country, high-walled cubicles became the norm. But by the late 1990s, preferences changed: only 23 percent wanted more privacy, while 50 percent said they needed more access to other people and 40 percent saying they wanted more interaction.
