Four IIBHS standards boost storm resiliency for roofs

Hurricane Standards from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety can help make roofs resilient in storms. Existing roofs can be strengthened with a two-part, closed-cell polyurethane foam that can be installed under each rafter or truss. When replacing the roof, the existing shingles should be removed and the new roof deck should be a minimum of 7/16-inch plywood or OSB, and be attached with 8d shank nails spaced nominally at 6 inches on center.
