CG&S Design-Build, Austin, Texas
CG&S Design-Build had already performed two previous remodels for the owners of this Austin home when they came to the company looking for a new pool and cabana.
“There was a deck and an awkward ramp down to the backyard, but the connection to the yard was very weak,” says Gregory Thomas, senior project architect at CG&S.
CG&S constructed a new series of decks around the existing oak trees in the yard, which the homeowners wanted to preserve. The firm brought in an arborist to consult on the project. He coached the construction team on how to protect the trees and how to time the construction to avoid infecting them with oak wilt.
The new C-shaped cabana is divided into three separate zones: a dining area and outdoor kitchen on one side, a central octagonal fire pit vented with a custom-made copper hood and a sitting area with bath on the other side. The cypress wood ceiling was treated with a flame-retardant stain to protect it from any ashes or sparks from the fire pit.
An octagonal spa that mimics the shape of the fire pit sits between the cabana and pool. The pool itself is a heated, salt-water pool sized for lap swimming.
