Manufacturers are increasing their offerings of aesthetically pleasing universal design products. Bathroom designs don’t have to sacrifice beauty in favor of functionality during a remodel. Whichever products are used, universal redesigns should incorporate the following elements, according to American Standard:
- Single-lever or easy-to-use faucets for sink, shower and tub
- Higher, wall-mounted toilets
- Wall-mounted or countertop lavatories that allow wheelchair access
- Grab bars near toilets, showers and tubs
- Skid-free flooring, and slip-resistant tub and shower surfaces
- Enlarged doorways
- Scald-protection faucets
- Shower seats, either permanent or fold-down
- Hand-held sprays for the shower
- No-barrier shower access
