Design/Build: Not for the faint of heart

Dec. 1, 2001

Just because design/build remodeling has become a lot more common doesn’t mean it’s an easy business model to follow. For example, if a design error results in a structural failure, the typical construction liability policy won’t cover rebuilding costs. Design/build remodelers should purchase errors-and-omission insurance, hire only those architectural or engineering consultants who have such coverage, and make sure there’s a clause in their contracts addressing this situation. For more advice on turning a remodeling company into a design/build firm, read Mastering the Business of Design/Build Remodeling, written by Professional Remodeler senior contributing editor Wendy Jordan with Linda Case and Victoria Downing (Remodelers Advantage, 2001).
