Chrysalis 2000

This year, the Chrysalis Awards expands beyond the Southeast and honors remodelers in five regions across the country.

The Chrysalis Award has long been recognized as a symbol of great design among remodelers in the Southeast. Perhaps that’s because they are always awarded during that region’s Southern Building Show. Perhaps it’s because the Award program is run by Ken Kanline, a proponent of remodeling who firmly believes that good design executed by a well-managed company lifts the entire industry.

Regardless, the prestige of the Chrysalis Award is about to spread to the rest of the country. This year, the program’s seventh, Chrysalis Awards have been presented to remodelers in five regions. Each region is run as a separate contest, with each winner recognized as a regional winner. In addition, Chrysalis Remodelers of the Year were recognized in almost every state.

The Chrysalis Awards program is sponsored by Lowe’s and Professional Remodeler magazine, and managed by Kanline, who, along with his wife PJ, also owns and operates the Southern Building Show.

Kanline’s panel of judges - Louis Joyner, building editor of Southern Living magazine; Daniel Gregory, home editor of Sunsetmagazine; and Mark Englund, partner of HomeStyles.Com - evaluate each entry on quality of design, technical difficulty, and the overall function of the project as it integrates into the existing structure.

Remodelers of the Year are chosen by different standards. "The primary criteria is what they give back to the community and/or the industry," Kanline says. That is then coupled with evidence of customer satisfaction and fair business dealings.

Marketing of the Award by the winners is a special passion for Kanline. He’s put together a package that not only includes photographs of the remodeler receiving the award, but also an Internet package that allows remodelers to market online. Lead generation through www.chrysalis.com has been a major part of the Award for a number of years. Each winner will receive a page on the website, at no cost, that will remain on the site for at least a year. The page includes color photography of the winning entry and general information about the remodeler.

Last month, at the Southern Building Show in Charlotte, N.C., the 2000 Chrysalis Awards were presented to the winners from each of the five regions.

Kitchen Under $40,000

Kitchen $40,000-$75,000: The clients are empty-nesters who entertain frequently. The use of two refrigerators (one wall built-in, the other a drawer refrigerator on the island) allows for two cooks to work in the kitchen simultaneously around the island. Part of the balance was the selection of appliances that accept cabinet panels to blend into the design. This kitchen gracefully accommodates a heavy schedule of entertaining and everyday use. Sunroom Under $40,000

Sunroom under $40,000: Starting with the roof structure and brick floor of an existing screened porch, this became an air conditioned family room/sun space, whose major function was to house the owner’s grand piano and collection of books. Proper climate conditioning was required to protect the Steinway piano. This was difficult since there was little space for HVAC equipment and few walls or chases to bring the heating supply down to the floor of the 14-foot high room. To accomplish this, a fan coil unit was installed in the existing ceiling plenum. Access is provided through a removable exterior gable vent. Supply lines were fitted down the only two exterior wall sections, which were 8 inches thick. Structural concerns were addressed with diaphragm walls, special fastening systems, and collar ties designed to fit seamlessly between stacked window sections. Whole House Remodel Over $1 Million

Whole house remodel over $1 million: The owners of this adobe home wanted to restore and modify the existing house and to add family and entertaining space with state-of-the-art equipment. Because of the steep hillside, the addition had to be located on the opposite end of the house from the main entertaining area. To connect the two areas, a galleria for an art and memorabilia collection was created along the back of the home. A series of decks and pathways was created that lead to a "secret garden" and connects new patios with the existing pool area. The result of the project is a home that provides new space and modern conveniences that the owners wanted, while maintaining the charm of the original adobe house, and adding many new natural and unique elements. Whole House Remodel $500,000-$1 Million

Whole house remodel $500,000-$1 million This estate cottage was severely damaged in a flood. FEMA financing to restore the structure was contingent upon raising it 5 feet. In considering this radical measure, the owner was able to rationalize a total remodel with added-on square footage. This property is part of what was the 14-acre Edgewild Estate developed by one of the Armour sisters in 1929. Because the property was so old, utility maps were unclear, inaccurate or nonexistent. For example, a 4,000-volt power line was identified by the utility as a water line. The hallmark of this project was attention to detail. Every phase and facet required unusual planning, problem solving and craftsmanship. The end result achieved a timeless tranquility. Allen Associates. Photo: Ian Cronshaw
