Red House Design Build
Providence, R.I.
Best business innovation: We noticed that questions were coming up during production where the carpenters were going to the designers and asking about specific details in the project. The designers will have a full picture in their heads as to what a finished bathroom might look like, but the carpenters need very precise instructions as to what to do.
We realized that we could save time and money if we worked out these details in advance. So we now do an internal review of the estimate, selections, and construction documents, and make sure that all three things are telling the same story. Production looks at it and they say, “If I were building this, what questions would I have? What’s going to make me go back to Design for clarification?” We rate the package one to five. Five means the production team has absolutely everything they need, and that’s really hard to achieve. Our goal is a four. We’re going to take an average score at the end of this year, and see how we’re doing. Obviously, if our average is three, then we know we have room for improvement.
