Ted O’Toole: Inventive Incentives

An impressive sales record, a team-based approach, and creative problem-solving combine to create substantial growth

Ted O’Toole, Manager of sales, design, and architecture for Agape Construction, in Kirkwood, Mo., 2015 Professional Remodeler 40 Under 40 awardee

Manager of sales, design, and architecture

Agape Construction, Kirkwood, Mo.

Age 34

Ted was hired in 2010 and sold less than $300,000 that year. Fast forward to 2014, when he led the sales team with an impressive $3.6 million in sales. But what makes Ted a true standout is his creativity. For example, in an effort to reduce expenses, he started an incentive program for field crews, which gives bonuses to the entire team for cutting down on trips to get supplies. The program was recognized by The Great Game of Business for its success and ingenuity.

In 2015, Ted was appointed to the newly formed management team and hit the ground running. He has introduced several cost-saving programs as well as accountability in design and forecasting.

Taking a team-based approach to leadership, Ted recognizes opportunities to work better and smarter, then engages the appropriate people to make those improvements a reality. By nurturing relationships and honoring the value of each individual, Ted has created an environment that celebrates teamwork, and it’s working for Agape. Over the past five years, sales for the company have grown from $2.5 million to $6.3 million.
