2015 Revenue: $4.5 million
Best practice: As a company with 28 employees, many of them tradespeople, Adams + Beasley Associates is on the frontlines of the war to hire and retain qualified staff. And it’s winning. The firm’s compensation package starts at 10 to 20 percent above market rate and includes paid time off, health coverage, life insurance, and a 401(k) plan. But there are also intangibles that make the company a great place to work. For example, one employee is an avid skier but can’t plan his vacations in advance since the area’s snowfall is unpredictable. Adams + Beasley gave him five “spontaneous ski days”—vacation he can use with no notice. It’s a benefit that doesn’t translate into more dollars, but is a valued part of that employee’s total package.
