For the second consecutive year, a national survey revealed that the siding color of choice for the highest number of homeowners is off-white/cream.

Building materials manufacturer Alside commissioned a survey conducted by The Harris Poll that asked 1,478 American homeowners for their color preferences if they were to update their home’s exterior in 2024.

While 40% of the respondents indicated that they would opt for a timeless neutral siding color, the top five specific color choices were off-white/cream (16%), light gray (15%), white (14%), light brown (11%), and medium blue (9%).

“Exterior color trends have always played a significant role in home improvement projects, and it’s no surprise that homeowners are looking to refresh the exterior of their homes with a color that stands the test of time,” said Alside Business Director, Vinyl & Composite Cladding, Chase Creighton. “Off-white/cream provides a perfect blend of elegance, versatility, and modern appeal that complements various architectural styles, making it a top choice for homeowners across the country.”

In addition to citing timelessness as a key factor when picking an exterior color, the homeowners surveyed also indicated that cost (35%), availability (23%), preference of their spouse or significant other (21%), and ideas they saw in magazines or on home improvement shows (20%) would play a role in their decisions.

Which Window Colors Do Homeowners Prefer?

Not surprisingly, survey respondents also chose a neutral color as their preference for exterior windows.

More than one-third (36%) of the homeowners indicated that they would select white windows if they were to replace or update their windows in 2024. Rounding out the top six window color choices were gray (11%), beige/clay (10%), light wood (10%), black (9%), and dark wood (9%).

When asked how they would choose window colors, the top three reasons were: picking a color that provides a contrast to the rest of the home, choosing a color that matches the exterior, and cost considerations. Other significant factors were availability (21%), meeting HOA or local guidelines (18%), ideas they saw in magazines or on home improvement shows (17%), and preference of their spouse or significant other (16%).
