The pandemic has given home health a whole new meaning down to the paint used inside. Sherwin-Williams has released two new products: SuperPaint with Sanitizing Technology and SuperPaint with Air Purifying Technology. The sanitizing paint kills bacteria while the air-purifying option can eliminate odors. These new offerings align with the company’s focus on health and wellness, including the new Living Well collection featuring eleven new color palettes.

“We asked a lot of our homes in 2020. Bedrooms were turned into classrooms, living rooms into gyms and kitchens into conference rooms,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “We are now more mindful than ever of how these spaces impact us both physically and mentally.”

Paints that fight microbes, eliminate odor

Kitchen island cooktops may look fancy and save space, but they can also introduce more odors to the kitchen without a heavy-duty ventilation hood. Rick Watson, director of product information and technical services at Sherwin-Williams, says that remodelers can apply the air-purifying SuperPaint to ceilings to help mitigate odors as they rise. Instead of trapping or masking odors, the air-purifying technology actually changes the odors at the molecular level to a water molecule and an inert gas to eliminate the smell.

On the other hand, the sanitizing SuperPaint is best applied to high-touch walls, trims and doors. The paint kills up to 99.9% of specific bacteria within two hours of direct contact for up to four years. After that, Watson says homeowners could apply another coat of the paint to renew its effectiveness. The paint is EPA-registered to kill bacteria such as Staph (Staphylococcus aureus), E. coli (Escherichia coli) and MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) on its painted surfaces.

Both paint options are available in the 540 hues in the new Living Well collection.
