2012 Professional Remodeler Design Awards: Addition Over $150,000
GOLD Addition over $150,000
Silent Rivers Design + Build, Clive, Iowa
The Iowa family that requested this addition from Silent Rivers Design+Build wanted to create a vacation spot in their own home, reminiscent of a Scandinavian or Caribbean spa. Silent Rivers wanted to build something that blended with the two previous additions they had made to the house. The result was this 1,700-square-foot space for relaxation and entertaining.
Keeping the structure, which connects to the original house at the basement level, as energy efficient as possible was one of the other goals of the design team. Building materials were chosen accordingly, including insulated concrete forms for the walls and roof and sustainably harvested Brazilian teak for the interior walls and ceiling.
Finding tan brick to match the rest of the house proved more difficult than expected, so the design team went for creative contrast, using chocolate brown brick for the majority of the exterior. They did have enough tan brick left over to build a wall to hide exterior mechanical equipment from view.Inside, Silent Rivers opted for a salt-water pool to minimize the amount of chemicals needed for cleaning. Lighting and ventilation were achieved, where possible, through passive strategies. The pool deck flows directly into a small living area, adjoined by an exercise room, yoga studio, and a guest bedroom.
