The NAHB’s Remodeling Market Index ranks “a desire for better/newer amenities” as the number one reason customers remodel.

In second place was homeowner’s “need to repair/replace old components.” The third popular reason was “desire for more space,” and avoiding moving or buying a new home was the fourth.
