Pro Tool Innovation Awards

Three top picks from ProToolReviews

By By ProToolReviews.com staff November 23, 2016
This article first appeared in the December 2016 issue of Pro Remodeler.

Every year, ProToolReviews.com conducts its Pro Tool Innovation Awards, examining hundreds of entries submitted by manufacturers in a dozen categories, from corded and cordless power tools to hand tools, accessories and fasteners, and more. Check out the complete list here

Makita XCV05Z 18V X2 LXT (36V) Brushless 1/2 Gallon HEPA Filter Backpack Dry Vacuum

Makita’s new backpack vacuum cuts the cord while still offering the power to clean up the jobsite or shop before calling it a day. Makita also promotes it as a dust extraction system that bridges the gap between low-capacity onboard systems and larger-capacity but less portable wheeled canisters. Powered by two 18-volt lithium-ion batteries, the BL Brushless Motor generates 53 cfm of suction and 28.5 inches of static water lift, according to Makita.

And really, anything that keeps you from having to bend or get down on your hands and knees is a win in our book. Price: $289.99

Ridgid R86044B/GEN5X Brushless 18V Compact Router

The cordless router category hasn’t really taken off with mainstream pro brands yet, but Ridgid has emerged to lead the pack this year, setting the initial bar. We’ll have to wait and see if anyone gives chase.

Built on the foundation of the popular Ridgid R2401 trim router, this cordless model features a variable speed dial, micro depth-of-cut dial, and soft-start motor to help avoid gouges on the work surface. Ridgid also put its Gen5X brushless motor inside to power it—an absolute must if this class is going to get attention from pros. Ridgid says the router cuts up to 400 feet of laminate on a single 5Ah battery charge (not included). Price: $119

Honeywell Sync Wireless Earmuff

This headset from Honeywell is one piece of PPE you’ll actually want to wear. Not only does it bring the decibel level down 25 points, the Bluetooth connection lets you play, pause, and skip streamed music and also accept, reject, mute, or end calls directly via the headset. An auxiliary port keeps you connected even without Bluetooth, and the boom microphone swings out of the way when not in use. Price: $120
