Bill Asdal, CGR, of Asdal Builders LLC in Chester, N.J., a long-time member and former chairman of the NAHB Remodelors Council, was named 2000 Remodelor of the Year during the council’s awards banquet in Philadelphia. The Remodelor of the Year is chosen from 12 Remodelor of the Month winners, which are selected from the 6,000 Remodelors Council members.

Asdal Builders has been tremendously successful. As a solid and experienced businessman, Asdal stands as an example to the industry. But he’s more than a remodeler and builder -- he’s a teacher. Asdal entered the construction business in 1978 with six years of teaching experience, an undergraduate degree in industrial education, and a master’s in administration and supervision. His company is diverse. He has built dozens of custom homes, developed several commercial sites, and completed hundreds of residential and commercial remodeling jobs throughout northern New Jersey. Asdal Builders is also involved in property management, and rejuvenating and leasing undervalued or depressed properties in several states. Despite the busy workload, Asdal has never stopped teaching.

"Being able to fulfill an educator’s role of expanding the capacity of my remodeling industry peers is a challenging and rewarding objective I continue to enjoy," he says. He can be seen at any number of seminars and trade shows throughout the year, speaking on the achievements and important industry issues. He has given presentations all over the country, including the Remodelers’ Show and the Builders’ Show, manufacturer locations, and home builders associations.

Asdal is a leader in the industry as well as a teacher to his peers. He served as chairman of the Remodelors Council in 1996, and during his tenure he initiated the relationship between Professional Remodeler and the Remodelors Council. He is currently serving the New Jersey Builders Association as an officer. In 1997, he received a National Remodeling Quality Award, which recognizes the industry’s best practices.

In 2000, Asdal will be busy as usual. "I’m currently working on several industry research projects with the NAHB Research Center and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and will be bringing the new data to the industry’s doorstep. An energy retrofit in Las Vegas, the 2000 Model reMODEL in Detroit and a ‘Learn vs. Earn’ education project all due in 2000 portend to better solutions to industry weaknesses."

How does he balance a busy career with his home life? "Balance is only possible by getting the family involved in understanding the mission of helping one’s chosen profession. To me, this can be a lesson to my children to be active and participate fully in their endeavors," he says.

"I’m honored to be included in such a prestigious group of industry leaders. The past 20 Remodelors of the Year have selflessly devoted time and energy to advancing the industry." he says. "I intend to live up to the legacy of this award."
