Looks like stone. Installs like siding. The timeless look of stone – without the time and mess.

Versetta Stone, one of the many brands and exterior product solutions from Boral Building Products, may be the secret ingredient modern remodelers can add to their recipes to achieve contemporary designs that homeowners desire.

To explain why, we caught up with Ben Drury, Brand Manager for Boral Building Products, who oversees 11 exterior product brands including TruExterior Siding & Trim, Versetta Stone, Kleer Lumber, Foundry Siding, and Tapco Tools. His diverse experience in the building products and construction industries help him balance a range of roles, from consulting on product development to managing customer expectations to internal and external marketing and engagement.

As a brand manager, what are the trends you’re seeing in the field these days as people spend more time around their homes than ever before?

The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced many aspects of our lives, and home design and exterior trends are no exception. From home improvement projects to neglected to-do lists and relocations to new homes in search of more space or outdoor-friendly properties, these shifts will likely continue to influence trends in the months to come. Alongside, there are some existing exterior trends that remain top of mind.

Staying at home means more time staring at ho-hum exteriors or facades in need of a facelift. Simple updates to the exterior, such as replacing aging siding, adding gable vents or decorative mounting blocks, or installing decorative trim, can go a long way to improving curb appeal. Outdoor living has been trending for years, but the need for more attractive exterior space is stronger than ever – from warm lighting and a flashier grill to exterior siding upgrades. And, that’s good news for Versetta Stone and other siding manufacturers who help add solution-oriented value for the remodeler looking to do a little more for their clients.

What would you say to a remodeling pro about the perceived challenges of offering stone siding to a homeowner?

Innovation has unlocked a world of potential for various siding solutions – including stone. With a product like Versetta Stone, installation has been made simple because of an integrated nailing flange to create a familiar panelized process using nails or screws. So, unlike regular stone, there’s no mess and no need for mortar, scratch coat, or metal lath.

Through research and discovery, product development and contractor education, remodelers are able to differentiate themselves by offering homeowners the beautiful and timeless look of stone with a quick and easy solution that provides years of satisfaction.

When stone siding isn’t prevalent in a neighborhood, how might remodelers work with their clients to use it to align with contemporary home designs?

Even without siding an entire home with stone, there are numerous ways to incorporate it and match up with contemporary looks. First, multi-textured facades continue among leading exterior trends. Blending multiple cladding types, such as a stone siding half wall with vinyl or poly-ash siding above and incorporating shingles or vertical accents on gables and bump-outs help distinguish homes along any streetscape and add warmth and curb appeal.

Along with the deck and patio surfaces, customers will realize how the surrounding façade looks, adding trim and other accents to make exteriors and outdoor spaces feel more refined and complete. Imagine a porch column that features stone siding around its base. Or, even a mailbox can look more elegant and less utilitarian with the right stone accent.

There are also numerous ways to use stone siding inside a home too, including bathroom walls, fireplaces, accent walls, kitchen backsplashes and freestanding bars.
