GOLD Finished Basement
Airoom Architects and Builders, Lincolnwood, Ill.
Despite a number of completed remodeling projects throughout the home, the owners were not satisfied with the amount of indoor entertainment space available. Airoom Architects and Builders tapped into the habitable space available in the unfinished basement. Airoom embarked on a full basement remodel that connected the lower level and the first floor to add recreation space while keeping the contemporary style of the home.
A new open rail curved staircase with a number of recessed niches creates a visual interest and opportunity to display artwork. At the bottom of the stairs is a granite countertop that serves as a workspace. A TV is located adjacent to the workspace can be seen from throughout the basement, including the pool table area.
The client wanted an open floor plan concept to keep the area spacious. A full wet bar with under counter refrigeration, dishwasher, and wall cabinets is located along a back wall. A powder room was added under the staircase. Wood frame panels made of frosted plexiglass inserts were installed in place a drywall to ensure additional light.
The judges cited the creativity and inviting atmosphere of the new space as factors in the project’s Gold Award.
